The attack was believed to be in retaliation for the release of the film The Interview, which depicted a fictional assassination of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. The hackers also demanded that Sony Pictures cancel the release of the film, and threatened to release more data if their demands were not met. Sony Pictures ultimately decided to cancel the release of the film, citing concerns for the safety of its employees and moviegoers. The FBI later determined that the attack was sponsored by the North Korean government.
