Linux uses less than Windows. Linux also has a smaller footprint than Windows, and it offers a plethora of desktop environments including several that are very lightweight.

If you have to use Windows, I'd recommend Windows LTSC 2021 IoT. It's Windows stripped down to be used for kiosks etc.

Linux will not make your personal computer magically work longer, however, it has a more diminutive memory and CPU footprint than Windows, leaving more of your resources for your programs.
