Since It's under your name, you're responsible for It and any events that occur with the laptop, will be directed at you.

The only thing that will affect the serial number method, Is If the school put In a warranty claim. But what's the likelihood of that happening?

Plus, the S/N is usually just written under the laptop on a sticker, anyone could read that if you were to show them your laptop and leave them alone with it for a minute or two, so yeah, doubt they could really do anything in case it turns out the S/N was used for a replacement.. obviously enough, don't use your name when SEing the new one

Go for it just use a different name and address if you are worried... school won't know anything chances of something going wrong with it are slim anyway and likely that school has their own technicians ours did many years ago

You'd still be questioned and they'll look Into It further, which you'd want to avoid at all costs.

If there's the slightest Indication you were Involved (which can easily be pinpointed), then It pretty much speaks for Itself. At the end of the day, It's not worth the risk, Irrespective of the possibilities you've mentioned.
